Materials matrix for Metal Injection Molding.

A curated selection of the most important production materials for MIM, with properties, typical fields of application and price corridor. All values refer to sintered and heat-treated conditions per MPIF 35 or DIN EN ISO 22068.

Both routes All listed materials are available via both production routes (European Supply / Global Supply). Special alloys on the global route on request. The route selection affects price and lead time, not material availability.

Sintering, HIP, heat treatment.

Material properties are not constants. They result from the chosen process route. Three standard routes cover 90 % of all applications.

R.01
Open sintering
Standard for stainless and low-alloy materials. Hydrogen or vacuum atmosphere. Residual porosity 2–5 %. Density 95–98 % theoretical.
Typical: 316L, FN02, FN08
R.02
Sintering + HIP
Hot isostatic pressing after sintering closes residual pores. Density > 99.8 %. Mandatory for aerospace and implant materials.
Typical: Ti-6Al-4V, Inconel, CoCr
R.03
Sintering + heat treatment
Precipitation hardening (H900, H1025, H1150) or quenching and tempering. Strength increase of 30–80 %. Decisive for springs, bolts and gears.
Typical: 17-4 PH, 4140, 4605
